RESTORED – Outages 12/11-12/12 2023

WECOutages

Tuesday, December 12 – 6 am

The last few WEC members who were out of service had power restored just after midnight. This storm was an example of how much it matters where in Vermont winter weather hits. Unlike in the two recent storms, the greatest damage was not in WEC territory and with the assistance of only one outside crew, WEC line workers were able to restore power in our service area quite quickly. Utilities to our north, where the majority of the damage was, are still working hard to restore power to more than 2,000 customers. Once WEC crews have completed clean up in our area we will reach out and offer assistance to those utilities, which have helped us during other storms.

Thanks to our members for their understanding of the challenges of providing electrical service in a rural territory and thanks especially to line crews for their dedicated work.

If you see a tree on power lines or lines down, please report it to us: local 802-223-5245 or toll-free 1-800-932-5245.
Remember: Do not approach downed lines or trees on lines, as they may still be energized.

Monday, December 11 – 5 pm

Crews have made good progress in restoring outages today. Currently, about 200 WEC members remain without power. We expect to restore the bulk of the outages tonight, but some may persist into tomorrow. WEC personnel will be working overnight to continue to restore power to members.

If you do not have power by 11 pm tonight, you will likely be out overnight.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as our crews work as safely and quickly as they can.

Remember: Do not approach downed lines or trees on lines, as they may still be energized.

Monday, December 11 – 2:45 pm

Although snow has stopped falling in much of WEC territory, we are continuing to see outages crop up across the towns we serve. This is primarily due to snow unloading, or branches on trees slapping back into power lines as snow melts and falls to the ground. Crews continue to work restoring these outages.

We have received a substantial number of reports of blinking lights (momentary outages) due to snow unloading, as well. Members can expect to see momentary outages as the wet heavy snow unloads throughout the evening. Please call if you power goes off and remains off.

This storm is a good example of how much it matters where and how winter weather hits our region. Although WEC members experienced a significant number of outages today, our territory fared well compared to some of our neighboring territories. That is just a function of where the wet snow happened to fall, and how many power lines were impacted. As WEC members know, our territory tends to get a large number of outages due to its rural nature, the ruggedness of our part of Vermont, and how winter weather often plays out in the area.

Remember: Do not approach downed lines or trees on lines, as they may still be energized.

Monday, December 11 – 12 pm

Scattered outages continue to occur across WEC territory, primarily due to snow unloading from trees and trees interacting with the lines. Currently, about 350 members are without power. Crews are working as safely and quickly as they can to restore power. Thank you for your patience.

Monday, December 11 – 10:30 am

WEC crews have restored power to the nearly 900 members affected by an outage caused by downed wires and poles near the East Montpelier substation.

Crews are working to restore power to the handful of other outages still present in Cabot, Duxbury, Worcester, Ryegate, and Walden.

Scattered outages may occur throughout the day as the storm finishes and as trees unload snow..

Remember: Do not approach downed lines or trees on lines, as they may still be energized.

Monday, December 11 – 7:30 am

Members in Barre Town, Orange, Plainfield, Marshfield, and East Montpelier are experiencing an outage due to down wires and poles near the East Montpelier substation. Crews are working on it, but as it will require replacing at least one pole, this outage may persist for several hours. Thank you for your patience.

Monday, December 11 – 7 am

Roughly 1,000 WEC members are currently without power, predominantly in the East Montpelier area. WEC personnel are assessing the outage.

Monday, December 11 – 5:30 am

WEC is experiencing scattered outages in its service territory at this time. The heavy wet snow brought by the snow storm currently in progress (and expected to continue throughout the day) is weighing down trees, causing them to interact with the lines.

Crews are currently working on restoring the outage in Middlesex. More updates will be posted here throughout the day.
