SCAM ALERT – JULY 2024

WECNotices

On Wednesday 31 July two WEC members received scam calls from the WEC phone # and name of “Washington Electric Co-op” demanding payment for an overdue account of $500 and $900. These calls were NOT made by the Co-op; the member was instructed by the scam caller to meet in person at a specific location in a local town with the money. The members called WEC immediately and were assured the scam call was not legitimate nor from WEC.  WEC follows specific procedures under Vermont PUC rules for contacting overdue accounts and does not direct members to meet in a public parking lot to make payment. Also, WEC offers many options for how the payment can be made to the utility, but we will not force a member to pay immediately by credit card. WEC urges any member who receives threatening or demanding calls from anyone claiming to represent the Co-op to immediately call WEC @ 802-223-5245 or the Attorney General of Vermont at (800) 649-2424 or by emailing AGO.CAP@vermont.gov.
